Cyclist André Drege dies in crash during Giro d’Austria | World News

Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege died in an accident during the Giro d’Austria.

A statement from the organisers said: “It is with deep sadness and great regret that we have to announce the passing of Andre Drege.

“On Saturday 6 July, after a very serious fall during the descent of the Grossglockner on stage 4 of the Giro d’Austria, André crashed and suffered serious injuries.

“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Andre and his Coop-Repsol team during this incredibly difficult time.”

Local police told Norwegian TV 2 that the crash was an “accident” and that they were investigating the cause.

Post-race presentations were cancelled out of respect following the incident.

Drege, who has been with Norwegian team Coop-Repsol since 2021, had won seven races this year and was tipped to move up to WorldTour level next year.

His team said they were “devastated” by his death and that their “thoughts and prayers” were with his family and loved ones.

“Andre’s family has requested privacy as they grieve his loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes be respected,” it said.

Cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, also paid tribute, saying its thoughts were with Drege’s family, friends and teammates.

Other professional teams joined in the tributes, including Lidl-Trek, which described the news as “heartbreaking”.

EF Pro Cycling wrote: “The entire cycling community has felt a great loss. Our thoughts are with Andre Drege’s friends, family and teammates. Rest in peace, Andre.”

It is not yet clear whether the final stage of the race will take place on Sunday.

The penultimate stage, between Grossglockner and Kals in East Tyrol, was won by Italian Filippo Ganna.

Drege is the latest professional cyclist to die in competition after the death of the Swiss cyclist Gino Mader Last year at the Tour de Suisse.

Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt died in a crash during a downhill section of the Giro d’Italia in May 2011.
