Mass shooting in Kentucky

Florence: Four people were killed and three others wounded in a shooting early Saturday at a house party in northern Kentucky, police said.

The shooting suspect later died after fleeing the home, prompting a police chase that ended with the suspect’s car crashing into a ditch, police said.

Police heard gunshots when they arrived at a home in Florence around 2:50 a.m., said Jeff Mallery, the city’s police chief. Police found seven gunshot victims in the home, Mallery told reporters during a news conference.

Police said four people were found dead. Three people were taken to a Cincinnati hospital in critical condition. They are expected to recover, Mallery said.

The suspect led police on a chase that ended when his vehicle left the road and crashed into a ditch. The suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died at a hospital, police said. Police said the suspect acted alone and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

People had gathered at the home to celebrate the birthday of the homeowner’s 21-year-old son, Mallery said. The homeowner was killed in the shooting, the police chief said. The 20-year-old suspect apparently knew people at the party but had not been invited, Mallery said.

The motive is under investigation. “I know what’s going on across the country, but this is the first time we’ve had a mass shooting in Florence,” Mallery said. “Yes, it’s very emotional. My emotions are with the victims, their families, the officers who responded, everyone who was affected by this situation.” Florence is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
