Dear Space Coast Daily:

My name is Paige Tetterton and I work with the Melbourne Time Travellers Society (Melbourne High School’s historical society). We specialise in researching and preserving Melbourne’s history and sharing our findings with the public.

In January, we discovered there was a time capsule at our school’s baseball field. After months of waiting for approval to dig (the school wouldn’t let us dig while baseball season was still on), we began our search with vague details.

We started on May 6, but on May 17 we were told it was by the back fence of the baseball field, and we wasted nine days searching the middle of the field. We continued searching until the last day of school (May 24) and stopped searching until June 6, when a baseball enrichment camp ended.

That day we visited the coaches and they explained to us that the time capsule was buried in a plastic container about three feet from the back fence. This meant that our metal detecting efforts had been in vain and our job had become much more difficult. We began digging again on June 13, but were stopped by the school administration due to liability concerns.

Now, we don’t really have a plan as it’s hard to get staff to monitor us outside and we have until August 1, 2024 before the field is renovated and we lose the ability to dig or even the time capsule is destroyed and thrown away.

We are trying to find members of the Melbourne High School classes of 1992 and 1993, specifically those who attended Coach Pete Donovan’s sociology class. We believe these members might be able to provide information about where he was buried because we have all the details we could ask for except the exact location.

We are trying to reach out to the community for help in finding these members and thought Space Coast Daily could help spread the word. If anyone has information about the time capsule or knows someone who may have it, please contact us at 321-574-9214 or [email protected].

Time is of the essence and we hope to recover and preserve this piece of Melbourne High history before it is too late.

Please contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Paige Tetterton
