Nearly 800 homes could be coming to Saraland in the proposed neighborhood

SARALAND, Ala. (WKRG) — The Saraland Planning Commission Board postponed its vote Tuesday night on a proposed neighborhood development plan.

The Southwind subdivision could bring 781 new homes to Saraland near Celeste Road.

“Saraland is going to have growth, but I think you can have controlled growth,” said Saraland Mayor Howard Rubenstein.

The subdivision would extend from the current neighborhood, The Woodlands of Saraland, to Radcliff Road.

Lisa Palmer lives in Radcliff and is concerned about the growth.

“We love being out there because it’s peaceful,” Palmer said.

On Tuesday night, the room was packed as residents brought their concerns to the board one by one. Concerns ranged from the impact the neighborhood could have on water, sewers, the school system and the lives of bears.

“My yard is their yard,” said Saraland resident Debra Sullivan.

The main concern among residents is traffic on Celeste Road. Some said the commute to and from the high school could take up to an hour; they said traffic could get much worse with the new homes.

Mayor Rubenstein said he is not entirely on board with the new neighborhood because he has his own concerns, but he assured the community that they are already working to combat traffic issues.

“We are currently undertaking a project that will give a large portion of Celeste Road five lanes,” Rubenstein said. “We are currently working on funding to get at least three lanes on the remainder of the road to the city limits.”

The board will reconsider the proposed neighborhood at the September planning committee meeting.
