New development plan aims to create ‘thriving neighborhoods’ on Erie’s east side

A neighborhood on Erie’s east side could see some development soon with a plan presented to the city council on Tuesday.

Representatives from the BUILD Community Development Corporation met with the Erie City Council in a “study session” to update them on their development plan for the neighborhood between East 12th Street and East 6th Street.

The plan’s main goals are to provide residents with access to affordable housing and health care, develop the workforce and create “thriving neighborhoods.”

Erie City Council President Jasmine Flores said the study session was a way for city officials to connect directly with the community to facilitate work on both ends.

“The development of people in those neighborhoods… shows that the city has not forgotten about these neighborhoods. It shows that they are slowly starting to diversify from the Perry Square and State Street area,” Flores said.

President Flores said the development will take time to complete, but people are welcome to provide feedback at future study sessions.
