WILLMAR — The Willmar Library is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some events require advance registration. Coloring contest for teenagers: Through August 3. Pick up a coloring sheet at the library. The winner in each age category wins a prize sponsored by the Friends of the Willmar Public Library. Voting begins August 5 and winners will be announced August 26.

Summer Reading Program for Teens: Until August 31st. Every five books you read will allow you to participate in a prize basket of your choice, as well as participate in the prize wheel. At the end of the summer, one person will be drawn for each prize basket. Stop by the library to pick up a reading log.

Treat Yourself Kits: Kits including all types of personal care items are available for teens ages 12-18. A library card is required to check out one included book and movie. One kit per person.

Cat Cafe: July 10, 5-7 p.m. People of all ages can sign up for a small-group session to play with cats, discuss adoption and fostering, and learn about what Hawk Creek Animal Shelter does. Register for a 20-minute slot at willmarpubliclibrary.org.

Teen Gaming Club: July 12, 3:30 p.m. Play games on our Nintendo Switch and Xbox One or play board and card games from the collection. Food and drinks will be provided. Some games are rated PG-13.

Teen Movie: July 17, 5:30 pm, ages 12-18, no registration required, check the library website to see what will be shown, popcorn and snacks will be provided.

Adult Reading Club: July 18, noon, multipurpose room. Discussion on “The Female Persuasion.” Snacks and drinks will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own lunch. August book to be determined. New members are always welcome to join the group which meets the third Thursday of every month.

Adult Movie Matinee: July 19, 2 p.m., multipurpose room, “Bob Marley: One Love,” snacks and drinks included.

The art of beauty: July 24, 5 p.m. Learn all about the art of beauty from a team of professional stylists from Abode Salon, who will go over hair, makeup, and nails. Teens will have the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned and ask questions of the stylists. Teens ages 12-18 only. Registration required on the library’s website.

For teenagers: The beaded sunglasses stand opened on July 1 and the popsicle stick stand opened on July 15. For children ages 12-18, limit one per person as supplies are limited. Sign up on the library website.

Literary loot for teenagers: Sign up and you’ll receive a library book based on your interests and a goodie bag to go with it. One per month for kids ages 12-18; re-sign up each month. July’s theme is beach reading.

Bus ride to the State Fair: Thursday, August 29, $40, including admission. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Departure at 7:00 a.m., return to Willmar around 5:00 p.m. Call to reserve a spot.

Community Crafts: Homemade Fire Starters and Marshmallows: July 10, 5 p.m., $10. It’s bonfire season. Create a perfect match for a summer evening. Register in advance online at willmarparksandrec.recdesk.com or call 320-262-5288.

Coffee with the police: July 11, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Enjoy coffee and muffins with local police officers.

Aging wisely: July 11, 1:30 p.m., free admission. The program is part of a series to help meet the educational, social and nutritional needs of older adults. Naomi Lindquist of the Barn Theatre will discuss upcoming shows, costumes and what goes into putting on a production.

Children of the community kitchen: July 11, 2:45-4 p.m., ages 4-12. Individual classes are $14 and six classes are $75. Kids are encouraged to prepare fun, easy dinners and snacks and learn basic cooking techniques. Register by the Monday before the session at willmarparksandrec.recdesk.com or call 320-262-5288.

Friday Afternoon Dance: July 12, 1-4pm, Leroy & Jerry, $8 dancers, $3 listeners.

Veterans Social Café: July 16, 9:30-11am, open to all veterans, police, fire, and EMS members.

Baby Steps: Social Media for Moms and Babies: July 16, 10-11am, free. Introduce your 3- to 12-month-old to new friends, share stories and participate in activities. Register online at willmarparksandrec.recdesk.com.

Rock floats: July 16, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Park in the Willmar Community Center parking lot and grab a root beer float before walking to Robbins Island for the Rockin’ Robbins concert. Cost is $3, with buy-one-get-one deals available.

Cross stitch group: July 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sew in a group while sharing and learning new techniques.

Summer Camp for Community Children: Senior Citizens Day: July 23, 2-4 p.m. The theme for the week at the summer camp, which has about 50 children enrolled, is “lifelong experiences in our community.” Older kids are invited to join the kids for “grown-up games,” a movie, a craft activity and snacks. Free, but RSVP by calling 320-262-5288 to make sure there are plenty of crafts and snacks.
